EASTERN EUROPEAN INTELLIGENCER 14 May 196.: President De Gaulle Arrives in Rumania The French President arrived today in Bucharest and re- portedly was greeted by thousands of enthusiastic spectators. He will be in Rumania on an official visit until the morning of 19 May. De Gaulle's address to the Rumanian parliament on 15 May and to the Rumanian people on television on 17 May highlight his speaking schedule. His arrival coincides with the thirteenth anniversary of the founding of the Warsaw Pact. Inasmuch as both he and Rumanian party and state chief Ceausescu oppose the concept of military blocs, it seems quite likely that the two maverick leaders will comment at least indirectly on NATO and the Warsaw Pact. De Gaulle's remarks on military blocs and other sensitive subjects coupled with the current tension in Eastern F>rnne have accentuated the trip's diplomatic delicacy. Polish movie industry at a recent meeting of the industry's party organization in Lodz. The meeting expelled renowned film director Alexander Ford from the party, and leveled stern warnings against three other directors who, unlike Ford, agreed to "self-criticism." Ford, who had already been ousted from his job some weeks ago, has indicated that he expected the party action. It is clear that Ford "talked back" during the meeting, and it is possible that he may now reconsider his earlier reported decision to ride out the present storm in Poland. The party meeting also called for a dissolution of all eight of the industry's film production teams, a proposal which will be considered further at a meeting later this month. The demise of these well-integrated teams and the purging of their directors could shell the end of the harassed Polish film industry'. Polish Deputy Foreign Trade Minister Appointed Ambassador Veteran, pro-Western Deputy Foreign Trade Minister, Franciszek Modrzewski, was appointed new Polish Ambassador to Belgium on 6 May, replacing Jan Wasilewski. The 66 year-old Modrzewski, who is not Jewish and whose apparent demotion is not directly related to the current poli- tical turmoil. in Poland, has worked well with Foreign Trade Minister Trampczynski. There were rumors as early as last fall, however, that the ministry would be reorganized and streamlined, eliminating up to three of the former five de- puty minister slots. The positions of Modrzewski and of Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/02/18: CIA-RDP79B00864A000800010038-2 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/02/18: CIA-RDP79B00864A000800010038-2 Deputy Minister Kutin, who was ousted some weeks ago, were among those mentioned for elimination. Earlier this year, Modrzewski himself said that he was looking forward to a foreign assignment, and had mentioned Belgium as a nc i - Bulgaria Limits US Embassy Complement Bulgaria is withholding approval of a new third secretary to the US embassy in Sofia because it would put the staff "over the complement" agreed to in 1959. The US does not recognize the 1959 talks as a concrete agreement on the size of the US mission, but rather as a working hypothesis en- visaged for the early years of a new mission after a ten year break in relations. Apparently the protocol department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs took this action without coordi- nating it with the America's department, suggesting that it may be another demonstration of orthodox vigilance designed to satisfy conservative elements in Sofia. The embassy expects, a favorable olution to the problem.
