Yugoslav E'x'e'rci's'e' '"P'o'c7a'o'ra' '7'2'"' 13.eg~i'ns
Over the past weekend units of the Yugoslav navy, air force
and territorial defense started a combined exercise designed
to test Yugoslavia's ability to drive off a sea-borne invasion.
According to the exercise scenario, the aggressor force estab-
lishes a beachhead on Lastovo, a small island near Split, and
then attempts to drive inland from there. Press releases are 25X1
claiming that a great amount of realism has been built into
the exercise.
"Podgora 72"is a continuation of the annual mass exercises
begun last year with "Sloboda 71," a mock defense against a
land invasion by forces with clear but unspoken.similarities
to the Soviet Army. Podgora, on the other hand, reportedly
presupposes an attack by a modernized naval force with huge
surface ships and overwhelming naval air su ort. It looks
like Tito is balancin the books a ain.
