Approved For Release 2005/08/03 : CIA-RDP79B00864A0001400010029-5 #84 EAST EUROPE B.,NCH NOTE . OCT 4.0590/'74 21 ,Tune 1974 CZEC:HOSLOVAKEA 'C.ze'c`l os`loVa'ki - 'Se`ek's` Alt'ernativ'e 'S`our'ces: tif Petroleum Prague and Budapest have signed an agreement to. construct the Hungarian section of the P.an-Adria oil'pipeline. Terms of .the agreement provide'-Hungary with C.zechosl.ovak credits for construction materials. The completed pipeline (scheduled for late 1976) will link Czechoslovakia and Hungary with .the deep- water ports of. Omisalj, Yugoslavia, the projected terminus for Arabian oil. Prague's willingness. to. cooperate wi.th:.Hungary?inthe Adria project is. consistent with its. other. ef.fb.rts to. diversify energy sources. Currently only a small percent of petroleum requirements is :supplied by Arab p.roducers.via rail from Yugoslav ports. By making provisions .for more abundant supplies. o.f..Arab oil, Czechoslovakia can lessen its. overwhelming. dependence on Moscow for crude oil. Moscow's ability to. exert overt pressure, however, will not be diminished. Moreover, the hard currency drain to, Arab .countries and the instability of Middle East oil suppliers, may well lead Czechoslovaks 25X1 to yearn for the relatively. cheaper and more secure supply 25X1 Approved For Release 2005/08/03 : CIA-RDP79B00864A001400010029-5
