Please find enclosed two sets of five prints each. These print are being
provided to satisfy your requirements for:
1). show differences between trees, and
2) discriminate trees from background.
The more natural appearing print (three color) provides an indication of
the differences between trees. The three color print was made to enhance
the differences between trees without regard for background separation. The
standard red, green, and blue set of separation negatives were used. During
the process of generating the prints from these separations it was necessary
to use a low contrast masking separation to suppress transparency defects.
The defects were being enhanced along with the differences in the trees.
The defects became so objectionable that it distorted most of the subject area
of interest. The use of the mask eliminated the problem, but at the same time
slightly reduced the overall scene enhancement.
The bi-color print was made to show the largest contrast between the
background and the trees. For this presentation a high contrast positive made
from the blue separation negative, was exposed with the blue separation negative.
The blue separation negative was given a green and blue light exposure on the
Ektacolor Professional Paper. The high contrast positive was registered and
exposed with a red light exposure.
?The blue record was picked for the bi-color presentation because of the
high separation of tones between the trees and surround. The identification key
for interpretation of this photograph is:
1) Solid red circles indicate trees,
2) Other red shaped areas indicate shadows,
3) Magenta areas indicate bushes or rocky areas, and.
4) Cyan represents the background.

If the bi--color-print is viewed in subdued light the red. areas will appear
to float above the print. The separation will be the greatest the larger the
chromatic abberations are in your eyes.
A test procedure will follow when the original transparency and
'separations are returned.
