MEMORANDUM FOR: Chief, Applied Photo-Science Division, TSSG
SUBJECT: Request for Support
1. The Electronic Research Laboratory of the Corning Glass
Works is presently under contract to pruduce an Improved Rear Projec-
tion Screen Material. A number of sample screens have been produced
and their characteristics measured. Although these measurements, in
most cases, exceed those of the best commercially available rear
projection screen material, a meaningful aid in evaluating the samples
is considered to be subjective testing. A suitable subjective test
routine is being designed by the Aerospace Group of The Boeing Company
under the Imagery Interpretation Research Program.
2. Basically, the subjective testing will consist of random
comparison of pairs of the sample screens as well as comparison of
each of the sample screens with a Polacoat Type LS-75 screen. In
addition, subjective evaluation of the resolution characteristics of
the sample screens and the Polacoat Type LS-75 screen will be made.
3. Present plans call for starting these tests on 3 June 1969,
with completion scheduled by 27 June 1969. Approximately 138 man-
hours of testing, not necessarily consecutive, will be required. Of
these 138 man-hours, 42 will be devoted to the resolution evaluation
of the screens and 96 will be devoted to-the subjective comparison
of the screens. The proposed test vehicle is the Richardson Film
Viewer belonging to the Production Services Group and located in room
2N833. Boeing personnel will conduct these tests.
4. APSD is requested to furnish the following specific support
for these tests.
?
a. Three (3) men (2 1/3 days/man) to participate as subjects
in the resolution evaluation portion of the tests. Ideally,
these men should be experienced in reading Air Force Resolution
Bar Targets and have a near acuity capability of about 14 inches,
either natural or corrected (i.e., a capability of reading material
held at a distance of 14 inches from the eye, wearing eyeglasses,
if necessary).

scenes of low contrast imagery (not necessarily the same scenes)
in dupe positive form, suitable for use in the Richardson Film

Viewer will handle 35mm through 9.5 inch wide film.) This imagery
will be used in the subjective comparison portion of the tests,
for which IEG will furnish the necessary personnel.
