Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2012/11/08 : CIA-RDP79B00873A002000010029-1 N1.0 *.? 28 August 1968 Alexandeia, Va. 22307 Here are data and information requested relating to our Photo Conversion System. 1 ? The information required to reproduce the Orthographic draw- ings derived from the subject photo is recorded on magnetic tape simultaneously with the development of the drawing. 2. "Change Detection" is facilitated by comparison of an earlier photo with the later photo, which has been converted by our System to the same scale and point of view. 3 Magnetic Tape Storage One inch of line drawing requires about one inch of tape. A ten (10) inch reel carries 2400 feet of tape. Assuming an 80% tape use factor, one reel will store about 23,000 inches of drawing lines. Using the photograph of the Soviet tanker as an example and making the resulting Orthographic drawings to a scale of about two feet for the length of the vessel, a ten inch reel would store two Orthographic views of about 130 similar ships. 4. Playback The maximum playback speed is about five times the maximum recording speed. The maximum recording speed is about ten linear inches per second. Again using the Soviet tanker as an example, each new Perspective view of the vessel would require ten to fifteen minutes. Programming Less than one minute is needed to set the ILLUSTROMAT controls for each new view.-No other programming is required. 6. Conversion Processing Two to three hours would be required for the operator to extract the necessary ILLUSTROMAT computer input information from the tanker photo and obtain two Orthographic views. 7. Operation Summary Two to three hours of the operator's time on the ILLUSTROMAT would be required to produce two Orthographic views. Additional views from any desired angleor perspective would require ten to fifteen minutes of playback time. 8. Optional System Expansions A graphic CRT display can be added to the system. If additional storage beyond the practical limits of the magnetic tape system is required, disc or drum storage may be added or substituted for the magnetic tape storage. The ILLUSTROMAT Photo Conversion System is of a modular design. The construction permits later addition of various types of inter-face and other equipment: Let us know if we can provide any, further information.
