Approved For Relea 9130097.&A0001 00240001-4 24 July 1968 MEMORANDUM FOR: Deputy Director for Intelligence; SUBJECT The Search for USS Scorpion 1. The US Naval Research Lab's vessel, the Mizar, is searching an area 450 miles south of the Azores where the Scorpion is believed to lie. This site has been selected on the basis of two under water explosions heard on 22 May. 2. The Mizar is equipped with a towed side-' looking sonar, a magnetometer, and underwater cameras. To date, a medium grained search has failed to locate any submarine debris. An object photo- graphed last week which appeared to be a hull section has been identified as a large rock. Debris has been sighted in the area, but none of it can be correlated with the Scorpion. 3.. The Navy will decide about 1 August whether to continue the search. A fine grain search of this area would require additional equipment including; navigational devices more precise than.the Transit satellite. BRUCE C. CLARKE, Jr. Director Strategic Research 0400r, .Approved For Release 2000/08/29 : CIA-RDP79B00972A000100~40001-4 f.
