MEMORANDUM FOR: Mr. R. J. Smith
SUBJECT . Director, ACDA, Request for Help
in Responding to Senator Gore
1. On 30 July, when the Director and I met
with Gerry Smith and other members of the US SALT
delegation, Gerry gave the Director a copy of a
letter from Senator Gore asking for some comparative
data on US and Soviet defense spending. A copy of
the Gore letter is attached.
2. I have forwarded to Gerry Smith the attached
suggested answers to Senator Gore's questions.
3. Phil Farley tells me ACDA has also received
suggested answers from OSD as well and he is sending
me a copy of that letter. Before this is all done,
there probably will have to be some kind of ACDA-
OSD-CIA conclave to make sure we all agree on the
response. I'll keep you informed.
4. I am sending copies of our response to
Gerry Smith to Jack Maury for his information and
to Frank Hand to show to Bill Baroody.
