SUBJECT: Inventory of USIB Research Studies 1. This memorandum forwards, in response to your request, an inventory and report on the current status of research studies concerned with the collection, production, support or coordination of foreign intel- ligence, which are being conducted under auspices or direction of the United States Intelligence Board. This inventory and report indicates the research studies being donee within the USIB structure that are along the lines of the recent Scientific Intelligence Committee study on The Course and Development of Soviet Electromagnetic Radiation Systems to 1972'', which I understand prompted your request. 2. This submission is not intended, of course,. to be a comprehensive report on all of the programs and activities being carried on by the Committees of the Board. While it gives a full account of Committee projects of a research nature, it does not cover the continuing work of the various Committees in such important areas as collection requirements and priorities, current intelligence analysis, contributions to N's, and coordination of other intel- ligence production, collection, and support efforts. A summary listing, by subject, of USIB research studies now in 'Process is contained In the attachment to this memorandum . The individual reports on this matter which were submitted by the Committees of USIB and the Assistant for Coordination/DCL are tabbed thereto and provide the following additional data for each research study: a. A statement of its subject. b. Authority for its initiation, including the date thereof, and whether it Is a periodic or ad hoc study. c. Identification of the group or agency preparing the study. d.
