Washington, DC 20505
All of us at ABC News are disappointed that you are
not appearing on "Issues and Answers" first as the
new Director of C.I.A. As you know from the reams
of letters, telegrams, telephone calls dating back
to the first of December, we certainly tried.
J1
However, being sorry is a negative virtue; I prefer
a positive assertive approach ... everythingt better
the second time around. Mr. Thuermer mentioned
Sunday, March 7th as a possibility. I should
certainly like to consider this date. It is quite
close to your guest appearance on Meet the Press
... which is bad. On the other hand, it-might come
as the first Sunday after the'Church Committee
Report is released ... which would be good..
Therefore, for the time being, I'd like to play it
cool.. with March 7th very much in mind. I'll
keep the date open and we can determine whether that
date or one a little farther along might be best
for you as well as for us.
In the meantime, all my very best wishes for a great
success in your new, important post.
Most sincerely,
Peggy Whed

All of us at ABC News extend our congratulations
on your prompt appointment as Director of the
C.I.A., and best wishes for a rewa':ding and
successful term of office.
As you know from our many notes and telephone calls,
we are hopeing to arrange a guest appearance with
you on ABC News''"Issues and Answers"" just as soon
as possible after your confirmation. An appearance
by you in the v6ry near future would seem to provide
the American people with security, confidence, trust,
interest, and an understanding of the importance of
the C.I.A.
Whenever you are ready, we are. I did suggest
February, 15th to Jennifer as a good date which would
give you time to "get your feet wet". I hope that'
this date, "live" or taped might suit you.
It's wonderful to see someone who has been a friend for
a long time in a new position of such exalted
responsibility. I want you to know that you have all
my sincere regards.

confirmation and extension of a telephone conversation
with of your. office. We wish to invite you to be the featured
speal nited Nations Day celebration to be held in New Orleans
during the weekend of October 24. However, the date may be adjusted in
terms of your other schedule requirements. On most of these annual
occasions the event has taken the form of a banquet at noon or in the
evening. Consequently, it would be most useful to know as soon as pos-
sible in order to reserve space.
Traditionally the event has been co-sponsored by the United Nations
Association of Greater New Orleans, the Foreign Relations Association,
the League of Women Voters, Tulane University, and the other universities
in the area, as well as civic organizations. I can assure you that you
will be most cordially welcomed by all to our city but, having been here
before, you probably will have little doubt on that score. Since I
personally feel (along with many others) that the increasing tension and
urgency in the international situation today demands the instrumentality
of an effective international agency, it becomes increasingly desirable
to advise our citizenry on these matters. Your close relationship with
the UN enables you to make the significant and authoritative contribution
to public awareness so needed now, and, as I see it, particularly so in
this part of the country. We hope you may be able to join us and partici-
pate in the occasion. Please advise us of any additional information you
may require as it may affect your decision.

A Professor Gillespie of
Tulane University called yesterday,
to invite the DCI to be guest
speaker at United Nations Day in
New Orleans about.October 24. Tulane
is one of the sponsoring bodies. The.
professor will put his request in
writing.
We recommend against the
DCI appearance. It is a politically
oriented event and very close to
the elections.
