WASHINGTON, D.C. 20036 (Code 202) 387-2800 Director: ALBERT VORSPAN Associate Director: RABBI DAVID SAPERSTEIN Mr. Theodore C. Sorensen Director Central Intelligence Agency P.O.BOX 2600 Washington D.C. 20013 Dear Mr. Sorensen, Ckehit'O".4 UNION OF AMERICAN HEBREW CONGREGATIONS ?-rnn pnx pnY Justice, Justice Shalt Thou Pursue On behalf of the Commission on Social Action of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and Central Conference of American Rabbis, as well as myself, I want to congratulate you on your appoin- tment as the Director of the CIA. We would be greatly honored if you could address our next meeting of the Commission being held here in Washington on Jan. 16 and 17. The Commission, consisting of nearly one hundred of the lay and rabbinic leaders of our movement, will be addressing the problems which America and the Jewish people will be facing during this next session of Congress. Our program begins at 1:00 P.M. on Sunday and continues until 5:00 P.M. on Monday. We can set the meeting place and time at your convenience. If you would prefer to meet at some office conven- ient for you on Monday that would be fine. Otherwise we would be delighted to have you join us at the Religious Action Center on either day. Best wishes for a good and healthy 1977 for you and your family. Your area of responsibility is one with which we, as all Americans, are deeply concerned. The precisely balanced tensions between constit- utional liberties and protections and the valid intelligence efforts of our governmnet require just those kinds of political and moral priorities the American people preceive you bring to this position. If it will be possible for you to meet with us on those dates, my office will be glad to work out the details when the appropriate staff person contacts us. I wish to include the career of a CIA Agent. I have received your recruiting literature and carefully read through it. However, what I need is an example to bring the essay home to the reader. Perhaps you could share with me a historical example (from the not to distant past) about the work of an agent that had some dramatic result. Of course, I realize that much of the work is research, study and infarmation gathering but readers of this work have been exposed to the many spy movies on television and in the movies and I would like to present a more realistic picture. I also would appreciate some black and white glossy photographs to illustrate this career. If security prevents pictures of people on the job, then pictures of the CIA building or unusual non-classified equipment used would help. I do appreciate your help.
