Approved For Release 2000/08/29 : A-RDP79R00890A001200030013-7 NSC BRIEFING 23 March 1960 DOMINICAN REPUBLIC I. Signs are increasing that the 30-year-old Trujillo dictatorship may be nearing an end as both internal and external pressures against it mount. ILLEGIB A. A high Dominican official has predicted that 25X1X Trujillo will last no more than one or two months. 25X1X Trujillo won't last even that long. C. Members of the Trujillo family are reported to have recently withdrawn some $46 million from the Reserve Bank--thus aggrayating the country's already poor economic position. II. Trujillo's departure will probably be sudden, leaving a power vacuum. A. Leftists and pro-Communists among the many Dominican exiles in various countries of the hemisphere can be expected to make every effort to return promptly in order to seize the initia- tive. 1. They can probably count on considerable support from Cuba's Castro. IN CLASS. DECLASSIFIED ASS.
