NSC BRIEAX ved For Release 2002/01/30: CIA-RDP79R0089OA001200040040*pri1 1960 DOMINICAN REPUBLIC I. The position of the Trujillo dictatorship continues to weaken. A A. As reported earlier, many Dominicans, including some in the regime itself, predict an early fall of the government. B. Although the regime's terror tactics have kept down the osert signs GJ/\IV of internal opposition, ~~~~~Vssidents actively plotting and the opposition to Trujillo steadily spreading. II. Trujillo himself evidently fails to grasp how bad his position is. A. His son General "Ramfis" Trujillo recently commented privately that his father is unable to understand the situation and refuses .to listen to those who advise him to relax controls. B. An old friend of Trujillo's sees the dictator as "mentally trapped" by advisers who want to keep their positions of power. ill. Trujillo's "resignation" on 1 April from leadership of the only political party, accompanied by a call for formation of opposition parties, was almost certainly nothing but political "gamesmanship." A, a probably hoped this would be considered a conciliatory gesture. But whatever his intent, the move is hardly likely to be taken seriously. 1. Memories are still strong of how Trujillo in the late 1940s called for opposition parties--and then ruthlessly purged those who had the temerity to test his good faith. C. Trujillo may have the party faithful vote to "refuse" his resig- nation--but this would be merely one more proof of his unrealistic attitude. IV. Among the Dominican disside t h n s t ere is a pro-Castro element, of un- known strength, which is counting on Cuba to provide support for an uprising. DOCLIMENTFJO. ___/& NO C}i,iN3 N CL AS _ A.
