Mr. Dulles advised the Board of the substaz ce of a conversation he
had had with Mr. Dutton of the White House in the light of a memorandum
from Mr. Dutton to the Secretary of Defense requesting recommendations
with respect to a possible reduction of interdepartmental committees
chaired by Defense. On the basis of that conversation Mr. Dulls
indicated that it would be agreeable to the White House if any inquiries
affecting USIB committees wire answered by Mr. Dulles in
consultation with Board members rather than by the department or
agency chairing such a committee. The Members concurred in this
procedure.
