O. #3251 UNLAWFUL FLIGHT TO AVOID CONFINEMENT - ROBBERY "TEN MOST WANTED FUGITIVES" PROGRAM RELEASE DATE: MARCH 4, 1959, P. M. THE CRIME: Edwin Sanford Garrison is charged with escape from Kilby Prison, Montgomery, Alabama, on August 23, 1958. Garrison is being placed on the "Ten Most Wanted Fugitives" list for the second time. He was initially placed on this list on October 26, 1953, after he had escaped from prison in Alabama on August 27, 1952. THE CRIMINAL: Garrison's criminal career dates back to 1921 when at the age of approximately 21, he was arrested in Detroit, Michigan, for violation of the Prohibition Act. Since then he has been convicted for robbery, burglary, larceny and murder. Garrison reportedly will violently resist arrest. He has a record of several escapes from penal institutions. He has been armed when arrested in the past and should be considered armed and dangerous. He is said to have been born March 25, 1900, Newport, Kentucky. He is 5' 9 1/2" tall, weighs approximately 143 pounds and has a slender build. His hair is grey, his eyes are blue and his complexion is medium. A white American, Garrison has been employed as an accountant, bookkeeper and an auditor. Garrison has various scars about his face and neck and has,two bad burn scars on his lower legs. He wears false teeth, occasionally drinks to excess, reportedly can perform complicated arithmetical problems and has been referred to as "a human adding machine. " PROCESS: A Federal complaint was filed on August 25, 1958, at Montgomery, Alabama, charging Garrison with unlawful interstate flight to avoid confinement after conviction for robbery. "TEN MOST WANTED FUGITIVES": Garrison replaces John Thomas Freeman who was apprehended on February 18, 1959, at Hillside, Maryland, by FBI Agents. This will be the list as of March 4, 1959.
