MEMORANDUY FOR THE INTELLIGENCE ADVISORY COMHITTEE
SUBJECT: Proposed Amendment to NIE 52-56: PROBABLE DEVELOPMENTS
IN PAKISTAN
1. NIE 52-56: Probable Developments in Pakistan was approved
by the IAC on 13 Novemberg
2. The estimate included the views .:).f the IAC of the
probable impact of the Mit:C.1e East situation on Pakistan.
(Conclusion H and paragraphs 15, 51,and 56 of the 9 November
text, as amended.)
3. No mention was made of the possible effect of the Middle
East crisis on the Pakistan economy. The Boar( of National
Estimates now believes that the readerts atenti-In should be
invited to the fact that some adverse effects are likely to
result even though we cannot estimate their extent.
4. The Board therefore recommends the inclusion of a
footnote to the caption "Probable Developments" preceding
paragraph 31 to read as follows:
"There will be some adverse effects to the
Pakistan economy as a result of the dislocations in
international trade arising from the blocking of the
Suez Canal. We cannot now estimate the extent of these
adverse effects."
