A Approved For Release 2000/08/29 : CIA-RDP79S01011A00L DEPARTMENT OF STATE Intelligence Brief No. 1000.381 Date: October 16, 1951 Office of Intelligence Research 2. MEXICO EXPECTED TO FOLLOW PRESENT POLICIES UDDER PROBABLE', N E X T PRESIDENT ADOLFO R,UIZ C O R T I.N E S Adolfo Ruiz Cortines, Minister of interior ihtha present administration, has accepted the nomination to the presidency offered by the Partido Revolucionario Institucional. The elections will be held in July 132 Comment: Inasmuch as the PRI is the government and dominant party in exico, and that opposition exists through tolerance only, it may be assumed that Ruiz Cortines' candidacy will be successful. In view of the popularity and success of the present administration and be- cause Ruiz Cortines has long been a devoted follower of its chief execu- tive, Miguel Aleman, it is expected that the next president will direct' Mexico along its present road. This means continued political modera- tion, including quiet repprochement with the church, and, pursuance of Aleman's program of economic expansion. On the basis of his known friendly attitude toward ' the US, it is -also expected that Ruiz will con- tinue the recent development of ' goad relations with this country insofar as it is compatible with Mexico's interne nationalism.. Because of his record of honesty in handling public fur3s, .Ruiz will be in a position to capitalize upon the current demand for. higher morality in government in Mexico.
