SOURCE REFERENCES
The sources used in this research aid are publications and announce-
ments of the government and Communist Party of the USSR, Soviet news-
papers and periodicals, reports on Soviet radiobroadcasts, reports of
prisoners-of-war and other returnees and defectors from the USSR,
reports by attaches and travelers, photographs, and, occasionally,
other sources. The overwhelming majority of sources used in preparing
this research aid do not appear in the individual list of source
references that follows, because the sheer volume of these sources
would make it impractical to list them. The brief summaries of indi-
vidual plants for example are based on a study of hundreds of reports
contained in the files of this organization and on other sources. All
the material available in the Industrial Register on each of the rolling
stock plants mentioned in this research aid was studied.
Evaluations, following the classification entry and designated
"Eval.," have the following significance:
Doc. - Documentary
A - Completely reliable
B - Usually reliable
C - Fairly reliable
D - Not usually reliable
E - Not reliable
F - Cannot be judged
1 - Confirmed by other sources
2 - Probably true
3 - Possibly true
4 - Doubtful
5 - Probably false
6 - Cannot be judged
"Documentary" refers to original documents of foreign governments
and organizations; copies or translations of such documents by a staff
officer; or information extracted from such documents by a staff offi-
cer, all of which may carry the field evaluation "Documentary."
Evaluations not otherwise designated are those appearing on the
cited document; those designated "RR" are by the author of this re-
search aid. No "RR" evaluation is given when the author agrees with
the evaluation on the cited document.
