CURRENT INTELLIGENCE MEMORANDUM
SUBJECT: Warhead of the Coastal Defense Missile
in Cuba
1. The coastal defense cruise missile in Cuba
is a modified version of the Soviet AS-1 air-to-.
surface missile, which was developed to carry a con-
ventional warhead of about 2200 pounds. In its role
in Cuba,as a surface-to-surface anti-shipping wea-
pon, we believe this missile carries a conventional
warhead of about this weight.
2. A weight of 2200 pounds would permit the
retro-fitting of a nuclear warhead, but there is no
evidence that this has been done for this weapon in
either role.
