Recent reports from roadwatch teams on Routes 12 and 23 reveal continuing Communist truck movement into the Panhandle area of Laos from North Vietnam. We still lack specifics on cargoes and destinations involved in this activity, but* it adds further evidence of a general reinforce- ment in this area, 2. in the period from 11 to 26 January a total of some 70 trucks moved west on Route 12 toward the Nhommarath- Mahaxay area, for an average of about 5 trucks per day. In the same period, about 100 trucks moved south on Route 23. These movements included a 60 truck convoy on 25 January, the largest south- bound convoy observed on Route 23 since mid-December. Most of the above trucks carried unidentified cargo, although in some instances small numbers of Com- munist troops were apparently transported. 3. On 20 January gov- ernment forces captured a North Vietnamese prisoner who admitted in a preliminary interrogation that he was assigned to a PAVN unit operating in the Tchepone area. He said that he entered Laos last November. 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2012/07/30: CIA-RDP79T00472A000400010028-7 Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2012/07/30: CIA-RDP79T00472A000400010028-7 LAI 4. We still have not regained our roadwatch capability along Route 7; the last report was on 28 December. However, there are indications that Communist traffic continues to move into the Plaine des Jarres via this key route. Recent photography confirms earlier visual sightings of the use of a ford just north of the destroyed Ban Ken bridge, east of Ban Ban. -2- 25X1 25X1 25X1 Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2012/07/30: CIA-RDP79T00472A000400010028-7 SECRET Declassified in Part -Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2012/07/30: CIA-RDP79T00472A000400010028-7 u ....-cntan iuz \ 0-C111? tzu - len Ching-hsi plan) P'ing-kuiP-- ?
