Approved OCI No. 1233/65 CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY Office of Current Intelligence 1 May 1965 INTELLIGENCE MEMORANDUM Situation in the Dominican Republic (As of EDT) 1. The US Ambassador has requested that Admiral Masterson make a ship available today for some 300 evacuees now crowding the lobby of the Hotel Embajador. The Ambassador is also anxious that a ship be pro- vided for at least 175 evacuees from La Romana (site of a US-owned sugar mill). 2. Student demonstrations against the US land- ings in the Dominican Republic have erupted in Vene- zuela, Chile, Panama, and Argentina, according to the press. In Caracas some 100 leftist students threw bottles of blue ink and acid at the US Embassy; in Santiago a mob of similar size stoned the US Embassy; the demonstrations in Panama City and Buenos Aires were more restrained. Larger scale and more violent leftist activities of this kind are to be expected in many Latin American countries in conjunction with today's May Day celebrations.
