INTELLIGENCE MEMORANDUM
Situation in the Dominican Republic
(As of 0400 EDT)
25X1
25X1
1.
there has been no impor-
tant c ange in the situation as of 0400 EDT. Sniper
fire continues into the US Embassy grounds, Former
US Ambassador Martin is scheduled to meet with rebel
leader Colonel Caamano later today.
2. The Chilean Foreign Minister has handed
the US Ambassador in Santiago a statement requesting
the withdrawal of North American military forces from
the Dominican Republic, "thus enabling the OAS Council
to adopt the collective measures called for accord-
ing to the OAS charter." Chile will probably press
this line at the OAS Foreign Ministers' meeting which
is to convene later this morning.
3. The Foreign Ministry of Mexico has also
called for withdrawal of US forces "at the earliest
date," saying that the Dominicans themselves should
solve their internal problems without any foreign
intervention. Other Latin American governments have
been critical of the US for the "unilateral" nature
of the US decision to send in troops.
