Situation in the Dominican Republic

around an Juan e las Matas is quiet an that anti-
rebel forces are in complete control. This area
is a few miles southwest of Santiago and near the
mountains where leftist extremists attempted their
guerrilla operation in late 1963. A small group
of extremists who had left the area for Santo
Domingo early in the insurrection have now returned.
Government forces-are searching all the people on
the roads for arms and are even confiscating knives.

poorly-armed soldiers are in the streets. In La
Romana, also on the south coast and the site of a
US-owned sugar mill, there has reportedly been
some unrest.

On 4 May, the labor unions in La Romana were still
dominated by Communists.
3. Radio Santo Domingo, now back in rebel
hands and broadcasting again, transmitted informa-
tion on more appointments by the Caamano govern-
ment. A broadcast of 9:00 pm EDT tonight reported
that Canonabo Javier Castillo had been appointed
a special delegate to the Chilean government.
This man is known to be a member of the radical
faction of the Social Christian Revolutionary
Party (PRSC) of the Dominican Republic. He is
likely to have considerable influence with mem-
bers of the Christian Democratic Party of Chile,
which has previously been reported joyful over
what it interpreted to be Christian Democratic in-
fluence in Caamano's government.
