Radio Santo Domingo, now speaking for Caamano's rebel government, broadcast portions of a statement by President Caamano late last night in which Caamano is quoted as declaring that he will not tolerate either rightists or leftists in his government. During a press conference, Caamano is reported to have declared that I'll am a Dominican and primarily democratic," He had some strong statements on the US military presence in Santo Domingo, stating that "no sovereign gov- ernment can permit occupation forces in its ter- ritory and I ask through international organiza- tions that the US troops leave quickly. We do not want conflict with the United States, but if they advance on the city in violation of the ceasefire, we will be obliged to defend ourselves," 2. A radio station in Santiago, Chile, broad- case a telephone interview with Juan Bosch last night. Bosch declared that "panic has taken hold, of the United States... this is why it is fabricating Communists in Santo Domingo and elsewhere in Latin America." 3. The US Embassy in Ecuador reports that Foreign Minister Escudero and Liberal Party leader Borja have told the ambassador that they both know Colonel Caamano, that they do not 'consider him a Communist, and that they strongly tend to 'believe that he represents the pro-Bosch forces and senti- ment in the Dominican Republic. Nevertheless, the Ecuadorean government has no intention of according Caamano's government "immediate" recognition.
