The India-Pakistan Situation

1. Pakistani spokesmen claim that the Indians have
launched several new attacks last night and this morning
into Azad (Free) Kashmir, with most of the action occuring
at Tithwal _..and at Mendhar, ten miles south of Poonch.
The. Pakistanis assert Indian forces involved in the
Mehdhar fighting constitute a "brigade of 2400 men." The
figure 2400 is far below the strength of a standard.Indian
brigade..

the Indian attacking force was little larger than a
battalion.. India has been attempting to consolidate and
improve its positions in the Poonch and Tithwal for
several weeks.

4. The Indians continue to find new issues on. which
to belabor the British, whom they consider to be unduly
sympathetic to Pakistan in the current dispute. A Delhi
radio broadcast to Asia, Australia, and New Zealand takes
the UK to task for not informing the Indian government
of various outrages which the Indians.clajm were committed
against Indian diplomats in Karachi last month. The
Indians say they had specifically asked the UK to.keep
them informed of any "untoward happening" affecting the
Indian diplomatic establishment in Pakistan.
