Approved For Release 2 AOOQ00010031-0 113 25X1 OCI No. 0759/36 CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY Office of Current Intelligence 7 January 1966 INTELLIGENCE MEMORANDUM The Dominican Republic Situation Report (Report as of 3:00 AM EST) 1. As of midnight both Santo Domingo and the country's second largest city Santiago were quiet, and only isolated violence was reported elsewhere in the country. 2. The Dominican military appears united in its determination to block Garcia Godoy's efforts to re- place most of its top leaders. Area commanders have indicated that they support Armed Forces Chief Rivera's stand against any changes at this time. It is not cer- tain whether the military has followed through on tL intentions early last night to begin rounding up Comm- munists. In any case, the military leaders have repeatedly stressed that caution be exercised not to harm anyone. 3. The military-operated Radio San Isidro, after being of the air for several montrs, began broadcasting again yesterday. It portrayed the military's decision to defy the President as a move to save the country romn a Communist takeover. The populace, including the remnants of Caamano's military force located within the 27th of February Camp, was advised that no one need fear anything as long as they behaved. The official govern- ment radio station,, Radio Santo Domingo, was taken over by the army yesterday. By last night it was parroting Radio San Isidro. Both stations signed off the air around midnight. 4. Rivera stressed the armed forces' duty to fight Communism and expressed the opinion that Bosch and Caamano had dictated policy under which Garcia Godoy issued decrees removing chiefs. Rivera is scheduled to meet with Garcia Godoy this morning, following which he and navy commander Jimenez will meet with the Organi- zation of American States Committee headed by Bunker.
