Police forcefully dispersed a group of students, appar- ently led by members of the Communist-oriented 14th of June Movement (MR-1J4), who were demonstrating and throw- ing rocks outside the headquarters of Balaguer's Reform- ist Party, located near the National Palace.. Several students were wounded, either by gunfire or clubbing, and a number were arrested. Groups of "tigres," local Santo Domingo toughs, were reported gathering about the city but were dispersed by police. As of 1330 the city was reported to be quiet. ~~XX 3, This is the type of incident which has frequJiW inflamed Dominican passions and could lead to further demonstrations. as of 28 June the 14th of June Movement had no plans for violence but would resort to force if the Dominican police "over-reacted or pro- voked an incident" during a peaceful demonstration. 4. This report, however, has not been corroborated, suggesting that this tactic might not have the endorsement of Bosch or the PRD hierarchy, The PRD won 60% of the Santo Domingo vote and probably could curtail street traffic if it went all out to do go. 25X1 C was not able to turn up any hard evidence of impending trouble, although each mentioned the possibility of violence. 25X1 C NO FOREIGN DISSNM Approved For Release 2001/03/, R 9 T00826A000900480001-4 C1 rl Approved For Releas'2001/03/22 : CIA-RDP79T0082000900480001-4 FORMER REBEL ZONE 4 CHANCERY OF THE FOREIGN MINISTRY
