1, Nothing has occurred in the past day to change
the principal conclusions of SNIP 86.2-1-66, Security
Conditions in the Dominican Republic, of 23 June 1966.
2, An incident that may be the forerunner of fur-
ther violence occurred about noon today in Santo Domingo.
Police forcefully dispersed a group of students, appar-
ently led by members of the Communist-oriented 14th of
June Movement (MR-1J4), who were demonstrating and throw-
ing rocks outside the headquarters of Balaguer's Reform-
ist Party, located near the National Palace.. Several
students were wounded, either by gunfire or clubbing, and
a number were arrested. Groups of "tigres," local Santo
Domingo toughs, were reported gathering about the city
but were dispersed by police. As of 1330 the city was
reported to be quiet. ~~XX

demonstrations.

members to stay off the streets on inauguration day in
order to show foreign delegations that the populace re-
jects Balaguer. This report, however, has not been
corroborated, suggesting that this tactic might not have
the endorsement of Bosch or the PRD hierarchy, The PRD
won 60% of the Santo Domingo vote and probably could
curtail street traffic if it went all out to do go.
