CAMBODIA
Sihanouk appears to be moving toward a more
middle-of-the-road course for Cambodia,
His reappraisal of Cambodia's position as a re-
sult of the changing war situation in South Vietnam
has not led to any diminution of anti-US and pro-
Communist statements, but it has prompted a series
of steps to extend contacts with the West and open
a dialogue with the US.

The new Cambodian cabinet announced on 20 Octo-
ber, which includes a number of conservatives and
excludes one of Phnom Penh's most prominent left-
ists, is further evidence of Sihanouk's responsive-
ness to proponents of a more moderate course.I
