The Director met with the Military Applications Subcommittee of the Joint Committee on Atomic Energy beginning at ten o'clock. The meeting went until approximately 11:20 a. nx. Senator Jackson. as Chairman of the Subcommittee, and also in his capacity as Chairman of the Nuclear Safeguards Subcommittee of Senate Preparedness Investigating Subcommittee of Senate Armed Services, specifically invited those members of the Nuclear Safeguards Subcommittee which included Senator Stuart Symington and Senator Margaret Chase Smith and also Senator John Stennis. member ex officio. A transcript was taken of the -neeting. Prior to the hearing, 20 copies of the prepared statement were delivered and receipted for by 3CAE. 2- The Director went through his entire prepared statement covering the following topics: Soviet Strategic Attack ICBM Forces Research and Development Future Possibilities MRBM-lRBb Force The Soviet Navy g Range Aviation Soviet Strategic Defense Advanced Defense Missile Systems Air Defense Soviet and East European Ground Forces Chinese Communist Advanced Weapons introduction Nuclear Weapons Program Delivery Systems Strategic Defenses 3. Since a transcript was taken, the details will not be included hore The briefing was very well received with Senator Jackson being most laudatory of the briefing content. Other members joined with him.
