Although prominent rebel leaders had infor- mally given assurances that Hector Garcia Godoy would be acceptable in such a role, the OAS committee found considerable resistance to him when it met with the rebel negotiating team on 1 July. The committee has now reportedly turned to consideration of a promi- nent physician, Dr. Felix Goico, as a possible interim president, Among the extremists in the rebel camp bitter di- visions are growing over the basic issue of whether or not to accept a negotiated solution at all. [An intran- sigent faction of the pro-Castro 14th of June Political Group (APCJ) is now circulating a flysheet in rebel territory strongly protesting the Caamano government's expressed willingness to negotiate. This faction thus joins an, extremist-controlled labor group and the pro- Peiping Dominican Popular Movement (MPD) in urging a continuation of the fight. The Moscow-oriented Com- munist party and the other faction of the APCJ, on the other hand, continue to support negotiations The hard-line factions arip presumably responsible for the continuing sporadic unrest in the interior. There was a rebel attack. on a police post in a small town in the eastern part of the country early yesterday morning. Two policemen were killed and three were wounded by a band of rebels armed with machine guns and rifles. 3 July 6 5 25X1 Approved For Release 2003/05/16 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO08400030001-5 Approved For Release 2003/05/16 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO08400030001-5 Approved F r Release 2003/05/16 CIA-RDP79T00975AO0840 030001-5 25X1 j 25 P Greece: [Prime Minister Papandreou's efforts to prevent disclosure of his son's covert left-of -center activity could further inflame political passions in Greece] Papandreou has told the US charge that he intends to remove Defense Minister Garoufalias and assume the portfolio himself.
