Armed inci- dents along the DMZ, which resulted in some 29 fatalities during last October and November, are un- usual at this time of year because of bad weather. The ROK defense minister will probably use this incident to buttress his case for more aggressive re- taliatory action. The strongest South Korean response in recent years occurred after the North Korean am- bush of a US patrol on 2 November. Disorders are also predicted at some of the polling places on Sunday, and there are rumors among student groups that extremist opposition groups will start guerrilla activity the following week. No major outbreak seems likely, since the na- tional guard is on the alert and in firm control of the cities.
