Cambodia: Sihanouk is continuing his crackdown on
leftist activities in Cambodia.

Two leftist Chinese businessmen were deported to
Communist China in May. The two have played key roles
in smuggling to the Viet Cong and in promoting Commu-
nist activities in Phnom Penh. One had close ties with
the Chinese Embassy there and was deported despite Chi-
nese efforts in his defense.

additional deportations may be in the offing.
The deportations followed Sihanouk's speech of 9 May,
which singled out the Chinese community in Cambodia
as a center of the "subversive" activity threatening the
nation's stability. pro- 25X1
Communist activities in Phnom Penh have been curtailed
drastically.
Although groups involved in the substantial smug-
gling to the Vietnamese Communists will probably lie low
in coming weeks, it is unlikely that this clandestine
traffic has been significantly disrupted.
