Israel-Jordan: Jordanian officials are alarmed
over possible Israeli retaliation for continued terrorism.
Terrorist incidents are taking place in Israel and
Israeli-occupied territory at the rate of more than one
a day. Recently the terrorists widened the target area
to include the southern part of Israel, and since 2 Janu-
ary there have been five incidents south of the Dead Sea.
In the most recent, on 13 January, an oil tank near the
Israeli port of Eilat was set on fire.

A spokesman for the Fatah terrorist organization
in Damascus has claimed responsibility for the Eilat
incident. and there is little reason to doubt his claim.

USSR-Poland: Brezhnev, Kosygin, and Podgorny
have completed a three-day visit to Warsaw for talks
with their Polish counterparts. The same group met at
about this. time last year. The TASS announcement of
the visit indicated that in addition to Soviet- Polish rela-
tions, the discussions dealt with developments in the
world Communist movement--a matter on which the
Russians and the Poles have established a pattern of
close consultations. The question of Soviet bloc tactics
in the light of diplomatic developments concerning Viet-
nam probably was raised in this context. Particular
Japan: U tra e tis Japanese are planning to pro-
voke violent incidents during the visit of the nuclear-
powered carrier Enterprise, which will arrive at the
Sasebo base on Thursday. Spokesmen for a radical fac-
tion of the Zengakuren student federation have announced
they intend to outdo their two demonstrations against
Sato at Tokyo airport last fall, which left one killed and
hundreds injured. One clash has already taken place in
Tokyo, as demonstrators left by train for Sasebo. While
more clashes probably are unavoidable, Japanese se-
curity officials are confident they can protect US facili-
ties and personnel within the base itself.1
