Chile: President Frei's Christian Democratic
Party could make a sharp change in policy at a
meeting to be held from 1 to 3 May.
Unlike Frei, a faction of the party believes
its best hope is to obtain the cooperation of the
Communists in the presidential election next year.
The two emerging contenders for the party's presi-
dential nomination are angling for Communist sup-
port and might promote a call for recognition of
Cuba as a means to that end, even though the Com-
munists are unlikely to back any Christian Demo-
crat.
In addition, pressure is building for action
against the US-based copper companies, and the
party might decide to join in by calling for rene-
gotiation of the copper agreements. Last week a
Christian Democratic deputy from the group that
usually supports Frei called for nationalization
of the Anaconda operations,
