C South Vietnam: Enemy action in the delta picked
up significantly over the weekend.
At least ten of the delta's 16 provinces were
shelled on 5 October, and two of the target areas
were provincial capitals. The increased tempo of
the fighting in the delta actually began late last
week when South Vietnamese irregular defense forces
met stiff Communist opposition in a two-day battle
near the Cambodian border. With the help of US air
strikes, the South Vietnamese killed 62 Communists
and destroyed most of an enemy b am in this area
of western Kien Tuong Province. (Map)

Communist China - UK: Peking's release of
Reuters correspondent Anthony Grey has removed a
long-standing irritant to Sino-British relations.
The Chinese action was prompted by the British
release on 3 October of the last of 13 Chinese
journalists jailed during the 1967 Communist dis-
turbances in Hong Kong. Grey was placed under house
arrest in July 1967 in retaliation for the detention
of the left-wing newsmen, and Peking from the begin-
ning has linked Grey's freedom to the release of
these journalists.\
Pek? g's closing out of this issue is another
token of Chinese interest in returning Sino-British
relations to their pre - Cultural Revolution status.
Since Grey's arrest 26 months ago, Communist China
has backed away from its policy of "confrontation"
in Hong Kong and has taken a number of diplomatic
steps to improve its ties with London.

Exploitation of labor and student grievances

sary of the death of Che Guevara on 8 October, has
set the stage for disorders that could easily lead
to a .olent collision with government security
Disorder erupted last week when President Velasco
persfal-ly intervened against striking hospital work-
ers. A walkout by teachers is planned for today,
and electrical workers say they are determined to
strike on Tuesday despite an expected sharp response
from the military. Anniversary celebrations of a
labor federation will be held Wednesday; the federa-

into an antigovernment demonstration.

students are planning street demonstrations and pos-
sibly terrorist acts this week to protest the lack
of facilities at the university, according to the
minister of education. The abolition of entrance
examinations, as demanded by students last spring,
has swollen the freshman class to three times its
normal size. The eight-year sentence handed down
last week to a former student leader for the murder
of a policeman has given the students another iss e

view of the recent unhappiness of military commanders
over the free-swinging activities of leftist groups.
Any clampdown, however, would probably not come 4ntil
