NORTH KOREA: THE USSR HAS SUPPLIED THE NORTH
KOREAN ARMY WITH A TACTICAL ROCKET SYSTEM.
PHOTOGRAPHY SHOWS EIGHT FROG
{FREE ROCKET OVER GKOUNDI TRANSPORTER-ERECTOR-
LAUNCHERS AND SUPPORT EQUIPMENT AT AN INSTALLATION
NEAR PYONGYANG.
THE FROG WAS DEVELOPED BY THE SOVIETS AS AN
UNGUIDED SURFACE-TO-SURFACE ROCKET FOR TACTICAL
SUPPORT OF GROUND FORCES. IT CAN DELIVER A HIGH
EXPLOSIVE, CHEMICAL, OR NUCLEAR WARHEAD TO A RANGE
OF 30-35 MILES. THE SOVIETS ALMOST CERTAINLY
WOULD NOT SUPPLY NUCLEAR WARHEADS TO THE NORTH
KOREANS.
THE DEPLOYMENT OF THESE ROCKETS NEAR PYONGYANG
INDICATES THAT THEY ARE INTENDED TO HAVE A DEFEN-
SIVE ROLE AGAINST INVADING FORCES. THE FROG IS A
MOBILE SYSTEM, HOWEVER, AND COULD BE DEPLOYED ELSE-
WHERE TO IMPROVE THE FIREPOWER OF NORTH KOREA"S
GROUND FORCES, WHICH ARE STILL EQUIPPED PRIMARILY
WITH SOVIET WORLD WAR II HEAVY WEAPONS AND EQUIP-
