Japan: The results of Prime Minister Sato's
talks with President Nixon next: week will set the
tone for future US-Japanese relations.

25X1
Looking toward national elections as early as
January, Sato appears apprehensive about the impact
of US insistence that Japan offer clearly stated
concessions on bilateral trade and investment is-
sues. The Japanese also fear that the US congres-
sional demand to pass judgment on an Okinawan agree-
ment could trigger adverse political reactions in
Japan.
Radical students in Japan are making a last-
ditch effort to disrupt Sato's departure on Monday.
The Japanese police have coped effectively with the
students' recently developed hit-and-run tactics,
but security authorities are concerned that a few
extremists will use terrorist acts. The students
feel they must make up for the failure of their
violent demonstrations on International Anti-War
Day last month.
