Libya: Reports of Egyptian troop movements into
Libya have now been confirmed by the US Embassy in
Tripoli. The total number of men involved is still
not known but there are at least
two battalions--one in Tripoli, the other in Benghazi.
reported that these troops are bringing in
antiaircra t guns. Rumors are also reported to be
circulating in Tripoli that Egyptian warships are ex-
pected to arrive in Libyan waters soon, allegedly to
engage in joint naval exercises with the Libyans.
There is still no evidence as to the purpose of these
movements, but the regime's concern over internal
security remains the,mo.st likely reason.
