The efforts by radicals of right and left to provoke clashes have been increasingly successful as Chileans of all classes react to food shortages, high prices, media exhortations, and the frustra- tions of a bad winter. All are quick to blame po- litical opponents for the problems, with the Allende administration's inept economic performance getting the most acrimonious attacks. Some businessmen, encouraged by the widespread effect of a recent shopowners' strike, are reportedly joining with the ultrarightist Fatherland and Free- dom group to try to raise tensions to the point of rovokin a coup by worried military officers. they hope to stir up demonstrations on a variety o issues in the ex- pectation that leftist extremists will retaliate. Like their counterparts, the far rightists reject political solutions. Moreover, they claim to have military contacts who agree The Communists, who in the past have seen a military coup as the most serious threat to the gov- ernment, appear less concerned than usual by the new rumors of plotting. One Commu- nist thinks that, although party leaders are nervous over their personal safety, even a violent confron- tation would not lead to a military coup. The Com- munists may believe that the bulk of the armed forces consider the defense of public security and of the constitutional government against all ex- tremists to be their prime responsibility, over riding consideration of a coup attempt. 2 Sep 72 Central Intelligence Bulletin 4 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 Approved For Release 2003/06/12 : CIA-RDP79T00975A022700030002-5 25X1 Approved For Release 2003/06/12 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO22700030002-5 Next 6 Page(s) In Document Exempt Approved For Release 2003/06/12 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO22700030002-5 Approved For Release 2003/06/12 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO22700030002-5 Top Secret Top Secret Approved For Release 2003/06/12 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO22700030002-5
