The opposition parties have demanded that President Allende authorize the armed forces to disarm all civilian paramilitary units. Knowledge that civilian supporters of the gov- ernment are being armed is heightening widespread military concern over the political situation. The North Vietnamese will take the occasion to thank the Soviet Union for its wartime support, and wil~~ o seek additional military and economic USSR-Cambodia: The Soviets are showing some signs of greater warmth toward Prince Sihanouk. Soviet ambassadors turned out for at least three of the airport welcomes during Sihanouk's recent ex- tensive. trip, a departure from the usual past prac- tice of sending lower-level representatives. None- theless, the Soviets are still talking to the Lon Nol government. Uganda: Ugandan authorities--with President Amin in command--are holding 112 Peace Corps volun- teers in a hotel in Entebbe. Their plane was ox- dered to return to Entebbe after an earlier refuel- ing stop. Amin has voiced suspicion that the volun- teers are mercenaries on their way to engage in sub- versive activities in Burundi or Rwanda. South Asia: The Pakistan National Assembly will meet today to discuss granting recognition to Bangladesh. President Bhutto reportedly will speak in favor of recognition and may ask for authority to do so whenever he decides it is in the national interest--presumably after agreement is reached on some of Pakistan's outstanding problems with India and Bangladesh.
