Egypt - Saudi Arabia - Indonesia
The Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Af-
fairs has told the US Embassy in Jidda that Egypt, threat-
ened with suspension from several international organiza-
tions, should take immediate steps to protect its member-
ship at the upcoming Islamic conference and at future
meetings of the Organization of African Unity and the
Nonaligned Movement. The official said Saudi Arabia,
intent on preserving Arab unity and a moderate Arab camp,
will initially assume a "dormant" position on the member-
ship issue. He stated, however, that the Saudi Govern-
ment, despite its desire to remain independent, would
have to support a suspension resolution introduced by
another Arab government.
The US Embassy in Cairo reports that Egyptian. Vice
President Mubarak, apparently in an effort to line up
support for Egypt at the Islamic conference, departed
Wednesday on a seven-day tour of Asian countries.

Iraq-Syria
The US Interests Section in Baghdad has learned
that Iraqi and Syrian leaders will meet before the end
of this month to agree on the next step in the unification
process between the two countries. Although it has no
specifics on the meeting, the Interests Section believes
that Iraq will press Syria to make some progress, real
or cosmetic, toward the unification of the two states and
the Baath party.

USSR :East: Germany . West Germany
The US Embassy in Bonn reported yesterday that a
Soviet diplomat said the USSR understands the East German
motives in restricting the activities of Western corres-
pondents and supports the East German measures. The
official made clear that he and other Soviet diplomats
recognized that the East German action might affect
adversely the positive attitude toward detente in West
Germany, but he charged that West German reporting about
East Germany is tendentious. In a broader vein, the
Soviet diplomat said that the USSR could not accept re-
cent statements made by West German politicians concern-
ing German reunification and that it is necessary for
Moscow to make clear the limits of West German reunifica-
tion policy. The Embassy commented that the West German
statements have created problems for Bonn in Poland the
USSR, and East Germany. 25X1
Bolivia
According to US Ambassador Boeker, President Padilla
told him yesterday that his health has now stabilized
and, with an eye to the coming election, he has decided
to continue the postponement of his visit to the US for a
medical examination until he leaves office in August.
Padilla reaffirmed his determination to preside over suc-
cessful elections on 1 July, and he plans to tighten up
his administration in order to hand over a government in
respectable shape. Padilla is concerned about the number
of candidates for the presidency but expects the race to
narrow to one between Victor Paz and Hernan Silesi
