El Salvador
According to press reports, an agreement reached
yesterday for the release of the French Ambassador to
El Salvador and five other hostages in exchange for
asylum in Panama for 25 members of the Peoples' Revolu-
tionary Bloc was aborted last night when the Panamanian
Government refused asylum and broke off negotiations
with the Bloc. The agreement for the exchange had been
negotiated by a French diplomat seeking the release of
the hostages and an end to the occupation of the French
and Venezuelan Embassies by the Salvadoran militants.
There was no immediate indication of the Bloc's reaction
to the Panamanian refusal. 25X1
Iran
Fighting tapered off as the temperature rose past
100 degrees in Khorramshahr late yesterday afternoon,
and an uneasy truce prevailed between progovernment rev-
olutionary guardsmen and Arab militants, according to
Western press reports. Estimates of up to 100 dead and
many others wounded were reported, many of the victims
struck by stray gunfire. The city remained under a
state of emergency--the first declared since the revolu-
tion, according to press accounts--and a curfew declared
