MEMORANDUM FOR: Chief, Reports Division, Office of Research and Reports
ATTENTION: Chief, Geographic Division, Office of Research and
Reports
SUBJECT: Request for construction of two maps of South and
Central America
1. It is requested that the construction of the following
two (2) maps be undertaken by the Geographic Division to fulfill
operational planning requirements of this office.
a. Base map intended for genefial operational planning
both at Headquarters and in the field. Area coverage to include
Mexico, Central America, the West Indies, South America, the
Bahama Islands, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
b. Situation map: To be highly detailed, approximately
81 vertical, to be.utilized for situation postings. Area
coverage to be the same as a. above but to include in addition
that portion of Antarctica subtended by the South American
continent. It is suggested that existent plates be utilized
in map construction so that completion date may be as soon
as possible.
c. Content: Emphasis to be on the following for both maps:
Place names and locations
Population centers and relative density
Principal sea and air lanes
Industrial complexes

Flow of strategic materials to the U. S. including the
following:
Mexico : antimony, fluourspar, lead, zinc:
Cuba : manganese, molasses, sugar

Ecuador : balsa
Peru : vanadium
