NEWLY IDENTIFIED TWIN PAN BATTALION
KOVOTSK SAM SITE B11-2, USSR (S)
(S/WNINTEL) The first complete TWIN PAN troposcatter radio relay battalion identified in
the USSR was seen at the inactive Kovotsk SAM Site Bl 1-2 on imagery of 'F-
This site is in the Odessa Military District, 53 nautical miles (nm) north-northeast of
Tiraspol. Equipment in the TWIN PAN battalion included 16 TWIN PAN sets and several com-
munications vans and cargo trucks. Elements of four TWIN PAN sets (two operationally de-
ployed) were in the training area in the southwest corner of the site.
(S/WNINTEL) In addition, a reserve signal equipment storage depot was also identified.
Equipment in the depot area included 11 P-284M I cable-laying sets, five P-284M cahle-laving; sets,
40 R-400/-404 radio relay sets, 12 R-400/-404 mast trucks, elements of four R-410 TWIN PLATE:
troposcatter relay sets, six possible R-401/-405 radio relay sets, one possible R-110 radio station,
64 ZIL communications vans, 37 GAZ-66 vans, 16 GAZ-63 generator vans, and other miscellane-
ous communications vans and cargo trucks.
(S/WNINTEL) Two large vehicle storage buildings were under construction (one externally
complete). and footings have been laid for additional storage/support buildings. Two quonset-type
sheds and several small support buildings have also been completed.
