MEMORANDUM FOR: Deputy Director for Administration
FROM: Robert W. Gambino
Director of Security
SUBJECT: Briefing on the Edwin C. Moore
Espionage Case
1. At the briefing sessions held on 4 and 5 April for
employees listed in the "fragment" of the January 1973
Central Intelligence Agency telephone directory which
Mr. Moore attempted to deliver to the Soviets, interest was
expressed in a further briefing following the trial.
Accordingly, a short meeting will be held in
Headquarters, on Friday, 20 May 1977 .from 0930-1000 hours
for those interested in obtaining more detailed information.
Attendance is voluntary and representatives of the Office of
General Counsel and the Office of Security will be available
to answer questions.
2. The espionage trial of Edwin G. Moore II concluded
on 5 May with a jury verdict of guilty on all five counts.
Despite our earlier fears, the United States Attorneys were
successful in preventing the public disclosure of the name
of any current or former employee. As a result of the legal
safeguards and physical protection employed during trial,
any compromise would have been limited to the period the
telephone directories were out of the Agency's control in
Mr. Moore's possession. There is no evidence that an
compromise occurred.
