You will remember that I wrote to you in April explain-
ing the reasons for the cancellation of Sheringham's visit to
Washington and the Far East Bureaus. The position is now, I hope,
clear, and if you are in agreement I would propose that his tour
should take place during October and the beginning of November.
The tentative dates are as follows:
Washington arrive. 5th October
depart 15th October
Santa Rosa arrive 15th October
depart 20th October
Tokio arrive 22nd October
depart 30th October (to include 3 days
at Hokkaido)
Okinawa arrive 30th October
depart 6th November
Saigon arrive 8th November
depart 10th November
On hearing from you that these proposed dates are suit-
able, I will have the flights confirmed and let you know full details
following that.
Our progress towards establishing a station in Nairobi is
slower than I would like, but building has been started and I have
hopes that it will be in full operation by the end of January.
Meantime, we are exploring the possibilities of setting up a tempor-
ary operation out there because I am very anxious to start moni~ormng
in East Africa as soon as we possibly can. We are endeavouring to
get temporary premises for this purpose with a view if possible to
getting some results towards the end of October. I will, however,
keep you fully informed as to this.
