"About 10,000 men are now working in the Zlatograd lead mines. This could seem
an extraordinarily large number considering the total output of the mines. However,
new horizontal shafts are being excavated continuously from north to south in the
immediate vicinity of the Greek frontier. The miners joke that at certain points they
have actually been working 50X1-HUM
2. "The administrative offices of the Zlatograd lead mines were rece.'i.y [date not
sptecifiej7moved from Zlatograd to the village of Madan, which is about 20 lan further
inland from the frontier. Zlatograd is a Moslem town with about 5,000 inhabitants.
3. "SovieI. executives and teehni::ians manage the lead mines. The general manager is
a Soviet, (fnu) Dzdznov. The chief engineer is a Soviet,(fnu) Galikin. The Soviet
engineer in charge of the 'September 9th' pit is (fnu) Mleio, His deputy is his
own vife :.
4. "The Soviet officials assigned to the Zlatograd mines have special living quarters
and a velL stocked commissary.
5.. "Surface workcre at tht lead =^.,,a earn 16-19 Leva per day,. The mincer_ _--rage
24 Leva per day.. An explosives expert earns about 32 Leva per day, a comparatively
good wage.. From this wage, the explosives expert pays 32 Leva per month for his
bunk in the barrack,.. He must also pair for his ftso'd: in the canteen a small
portion of at and vegetable,- costf f..v-_ c; L ,_x Lev,.; 1u..ch and dinner cost about 10 Leva
each..
