General Information. The area of Port San Juan, Peru has recently been rebuilt and today is considered one of South America's finest ore ports. It is now a modern ore handling port capable of loading large vessels in approximately tenjto twelve hours. Two highways have been built, one being a paved two lane highspeed roadway connecting the ore mines with the port area. A second highway is presently unler construction and wil. be a paved roadway which will run along the Peruvian coest in a north and south direction connecting San Juan with nearby cities. lSeveral buildings have been constructed in the portllarea and are presentlyused!as offices, warehouses and quarters for the port authorities and company employ, ees.'I A finger pier extending approximately 800 feet to the seaward has been recently completed. According to the informant there is no surge or strong tides which present difficulties when maneuvering to secure alongside the pier. The area of San Juan islarid dry country and it is reported that fresh water lmust be hauled almost fifty lmiles to San Juan due to the lack of natural water facilties there. No stores, provisions or bunkers are obtainable at San Juan and .he surroubding area leaves little in the way of entertalisn;nt or recreation for crew members while vessels are secured to its dock. 2. Methods of Haulinr Ore from Mine to Ships. The ore is obtained from mines located to the east of the port of San Juan and is hauled by modern American trucks over the highway to an ore stockpile located E;t San Juan. A truck unloadirk hopper has been constructed to expedite the unloading of trucks and from the hopped, ore is carried to an ore stockpile located close to the pier area. A belt conveyor has been built to carry the ore on to the new pier where it is then loaded aboard i vessels by means of a traveling gantry. It is reporter that the conveyor and gantry are capable of load- ing 1000 tons of ore. per hour and could easily load a 10 thousand ton American vessel in less than 12 hours.
