3. "A new 'normal' one-track railway line is under construction summer 1953]
in the Karelo-Finnish SSR from Medvezhegorsk on the Leningrad-Murmansk line
northwest toward the Finnish frontier at L1eNS-. It is constructed to carry
heavy traffic. The purpose seems purely strategic. The station of Medvezhegorak
is connected by a 'normal' one-track railway line with the port of Povenets at
the entrance to the Baltic-White Sea Canal.
1:. "There is normal traffic on the railway line Lodeinoie - Pole - Olonets - Salmi
- Pitkaranta - Lotmala.
5. "The Leningrad-Murmansk railway is being continued north of Murmansk. On 1 May
53 heavy trains travelled from Murmansk to Vaenga and toAntonovka opposite the
miiil.nry be of Folia naie. The extension thus links the Vaenga naval base
with the Leningrad-Murmansk railway line.
6. "By 20 May 53 all 'constructions' at Poli.arnoie, the former naval base of the
Northern Fleet, had been transferred to the new base at Vaenga. The repair
yards of the Northern Fleet are also now at Vaenga. The chief of these yards
is Captain of the Second Rank (fnu) Zakharov."
