Two miles nearer to the River entrance was a Fairway Buoy, where the pilots board merchant ships. anchored here to await high tide and the pilot came aboard with two armed soldiers. The pilot then took the ship to the Quarantine Anchorage juzt out- side the river entrance, where the inspecting doctor and Customs officials boarded the ship. all water tanks were sealed and the ship received strict orders not to discharge any water over the side. Samples of the water were taken ashore for testing. This action was taken with the explanation that the Germ Warfare going on in Korea was dangerous and required close attention for protection against it. After the ship was cleared by the doctor, the pilot took the ship on into the river and proceeded to Holt's Wharf, located at 1210 32' 15"E and 31? 15' 05" N. After the ship docked at Holt's Wharf, a searching party of about 15 people came aboard to conduct a thorough search while the crew was mustered in the mess room. Radiio, cameras, binoculars, etc. were beelei. iul armed guard was observed on the platform built above the warehouse which was the farthest east of the four warehouses at Holt's Wharf. Papers were closely checked and members of the crew were issued special passes to go ashore. Guards were posted at the gangway. Each day Chinese officials came with a car to take crew members to the city for free beer, but at this meeting place the crew was given a talk on New China. Literature (written in English) was passed out to crew members to show what had been accomplished for New China. Efforts were made to play up the Greek Communists. After the ship completed loading, another thorough search was conducted before the ship was allowed to sail. 3.
